Aaron/Rebecca - MK data NZ wide
What can leaders do to make a difference?
What are the recommendations....digital management makes the work faster and efficient. Teacher can use time better.

Things we could do - Monitor and develop teachers’ planning and learning design so that Learn -Create - Share can be most effective in promoting achievement and other outcomes

Reading - extended discussion of text, deeply explore ideas and thinking
Need to give the students a chance to be critical, analyse the text
Students need choice to present their learning themselves

If we want to improve reading we need as leaders to find ways of shifting the practice of critical thinking

Glenbrae School - playbased and digital (Viena) uses Quick 60 too

Johanna's school have an agent to get teachers

MIT - Hannah, Sandra, Santi
Hannah - created short movie clips to explore cybersmart and key competencies with critical thinking. Link between critical thinking and interpersonal skills - whole class brain storm, explicit teaching on key points, film 30 sec movie then share on blogs.
Children teaching and supporting each other in their learning. Sharing to peers, school, other school and community

Sandra - reading comprehension (secondary)
Collaboration and competition to enhance achievement
Lots of activities from group, high levels of talk, games, through to socrative quiz. Lots of group activities but checking in on managing independently
12 step programme condensed
Aaron Wilson and Rebecca Jesson - T shaped literacy skills
Check out Sandra's blog for highs and lows

Santi - Mathematics in year 6
Framework to solve maths problems
Financial literacy focus to teach across the curriculum
Students formed business groups - learning on a site - real and relevant learning

Joanne - SOLO Year 3/4

Marc - Maths year 3/4
DMIC
Problem solving was strong
Visible learning was missing - 4 parts - goal setting, hot spot, work shop (tied in from hot spot where the confusion was), learners created resources to help others and create a digital assessment of their learning, flexible learning groups. Using explain everything. Maths talk moves with feedback and feedforward.

Kelsey Reading
Voice type tool and also Screen Castify to re-read and reflect on their learning. Used reading from TKI resource. Recorded stories were then created and they shared it with others.

Amber - Writing
Hear Map Step Speak
Story telling
This would be great for our local curriculum

Eugene - Literacy Circles Year 5/6

Nicola - new entrant Writing
Created their own word cards with Te Hiku words
Check this out for Mel and Leonie
Tap on k words - search for their words - ipad gives word if they are not sure
People words, place words etc

Naomi - created a game - literacy

Think about creating shift in learning
- analysis framework for evaluating PLD
- analysis framework

Where to next:
- Discussion Te Hiku cluster:
Promoting and participating in teacher learning and development - most effect size
Planning, co-ordinating and evaluating teaching
Innovative ways of sharing good practice amongst the schools in our cluster
Promoting the strength base that we have - the answer is in the room
We will make a strategic plan that utilises the strength in our cluster based on the literacy acquisition model
Develop a common planning framework - literacy lead team to facilitate this - with expert support

Christine Rubie Davies - TOD term 3

Christine Rubie Davies

Teacher Expectation

Expectations
Revisit teacher bias.  Lower level students, if given more opportunities, rise to meet the other students.  Students notice the difference of privilege or opportunities given by the teacher.

3 key elements of high expectation
- grouping and learning activities
- class climate
- goal setting - student autonomy and motivation

Lots of evidence shows that ability grouping constrains student learning and motivation.  Mixed ability grouping gives students the opportunity to access a higher range of learning.

Teacher expectations and stereotyping
Its a natural human trait where we stereotype people into groups.  Data shows that teachers have lower expectations for ethnic minority students.  What does NZ show?  NZ data shows that teachers have higher expectations for European, Pacific and Asian compared to Maori.  When teachers have higher expectations the students make more progress.   Data within a secondary maths classroom shows that 19% of teachers show bias towards Maori students.  Consequences for students is less opportunity and lower level groups.  Data gathered from Starpath and Hanna?

Maori learners say that they would like teachers to actually like them, that the teachers believe you will pass, that you are encouraged to strive"

A key statement to consider
"ARE THERE WAYS THAT I COULD BETTER SUPPORT MY MAORI STUDENTS?"

Check the diagram showing the key elements of influence for our students.
Rangatiratanga
Wananga
Mana motuhake

Goal setting

Foster intrinsic motivation

Extrinsic rewards (stickers, certificates etc) can be unmotivating if the teacher didn't notice or missed
Contingent rewards (if you work well you will get a game) are not very successful so unlikely to be continued
Non contingent - we have had a fabulous day let's go for a game

Aim for intrinsic rewards

Classroom climate
Student engagement and classroom climate are linked
Sense of belonging is key

Inquiry on Digital Learning

It is week 6, middle of term two.  This week we have our toolkits with Manaiakalani that all staff are opting into.  It has been great to build leadership capacity within our school as we have two teachers that are part of the online toolkits by sharing their knowledge with others.

Part of our strategic planning is building up leadership capability and capacity within our school, along with digital learning.

I am taking part in the online learning toolkits.  It is good to walk alongside staff in their learning journey and keep up with new learning myself.  My goal is to streamline my workflow so that I am more efficient and effective.

This week our staff are not meeting together as we have reports due, online toolkits and planning demands.  It is interesting as we move together on the online learning platform how I miss the kanohi te kanohi - face to face interactions.  We need to be careful that we are not too busy to interact with others.  Online emails and interactions online do not have the benefit of reading how people are feeling and picking up on body language.  Having said that, I am a true believer that our online platform is a way forward to streamline our workflow and enable us to be more efficient.

Term 2, Kahui Ako

Kahui Ako

Kahui Ako Strategic Plan

Discussion around next steps:
- ECE/early childhood teachers getting together around "play based" learning
- monthly brochure is going to be circulated
- Richard Murray is working on a website for the Kahui Ako - think about what the site is going to be used for.  Learning is paramount
- Whai korero priority that our students can korero, waiata etc.  Next steps to scope what the school needs are.
- Think of our place - Maori and Dalmation

Workstreams:
- Iwi/school partnership (originally done in Rotorua very successful)
- Te Ao Maori and support that we need for this

Student Group for Kahui Ako
Always being run by the students.  Start with student agency.  Try to move towards over-arching goals that we are working on.  This will happen in term 3 of 2019.

Teacher Hub
How can we grow our own teachers in rural areas.

Across School Teachers Report
Transition meeting has been attended and collaboration is coming through as the key
Student survey shows the data is consistently across the Kahui Ako in early childhood, primary and secondary.  Interesting that the same issues are coming up.
Sue Holmes analysed the data from Cognition.

Generally secondary school are showing less student agency, higher at early childhood
Positive to see transition between each school is very high
Students all like learning and feel the teacher treats them fairly.

Next steps
Sharing of learning
Responsiveness to learning

Show case will happen in term 4 - it will be student led.

Inquiry
Really great to see collaboration in action.  This kaupapa is being student led and all stakeholders have had a say and are engaged.  I am really excited to see opportunities for our teachers and learners.  The key aspects that we are focusing on with fluency in Te Reo will now be supported.  The power of working as an entire group is exciting.

DFI - Session 9 - Revision

It's the last session!!  Argh!
Priority needs to be given to keep the digital learning at the forefront to ensure I don't forget these pieces of gold I have learnt.  The on-going blog will be really helpful for me to refresh.  Great to have met some new colleagues to be able to shoulder tap to remind me too!

Really like the idea of a "slam dunk" session.  Staff record a screen castify and share for 1-2 minutes at each staff meeting of what they are doing, how it is going and next steps.

Ubiquitous learning was a really good reminder.  This concept of accessing learning anytime, anywhere to help learning is paramount.  The summer learning journey is a great option for our whanau to access.  They would love this option for their tamariki.

Google classroom learning

This is closed - you have to have a login to see it and interact with it.  Therefore class sites are a better option.
Things drop to the bottom so it makes it more cumbersome.

It is in the waffle
Go to + to create classroom
Class name - Enter eg. DFI practice

3 tabs at the top - Stream, Classroom, People
Go to classroom to share
Create

Assignment - choose all or choose some students
Give instructions
Assign points if its an assignment
Choose due date
Can attach anything there
You can change view only copy or editing rights or make a copy for each student - automatically names for the kids
Assign or schedule for them

People - invite students to your class or invite other teachers
Copy and paste a list of students
or join using a code (click on join class)

Exam day today

What a great chance to be in a student position by sitting an exam.  Let's just say it has been a huge learning curve as it has been some time since I have sat an exam!  Great to be reminded of the stress!

Summary

Overall have really enjoyed my DFI time.  It has been great getting out of the school and having a look around at other schools, other practice and pedagogy.  Really nice to tour around different schools and see their spaces too.
It is always great to model being a learner and I have enjoyed challenging my thinking and my knowledge.  Digital is the way forward and to be more stream lined and effective in my work flow is essential.  It has also given me a great deal of confidence to try new things and experiment a bit too.  A huge thanks to Venessa Davan and Kerry Boyde-Preece.  They do a wonderful job and challenging, supporting and enabling!
The focus for me is to continue to keep practicing, using rewindable learning, Screen castify etc, will be great to re-visit my learning.

No DFI but the learning continues

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the DFI session this week as we had a shortage of teacher cover - and it's only week 3 - the struggle is real!!!
However, I continued with my learning through the Manaiakalani kaupapa.
I have re-crafted my pepeha and mihi - inspired by the wonderful schools that we have visited.  I have engaged with key stake holders to ensure that these are correct too!
I have also had a tutu with google forms and am almost ready to share this learning with the community too.
My next step is to create an online newsletter which is far more user friendly than what we are currently doing.

The session of DFI that I missed was a Waitangi with was part of the Raranga Matahiko programme.  I was fortunate enough to attend 2 days prior to DFI to experience the learning through this programme alongside the students.  WOW!  Absolutely love the kaupapa and the opportunities that our Far North tamariki have benefited from.  The classroom teacher is now embedding the learning and it is an exciting journey.  What a bonus to learn through the Waitangi platform.

DFI 7: Dealing with Data

Dealing with data

Reminder to go back and use the Manaiakalani website as a reminder of information and background pedagogy and practice which is so easily accessed.  This is a fabulous resource for us to go and use and refer back to.

Check out the Manaiakalani visit day - they run these 3 times a year - this would be really good PD for our whole school.  Great chance to see these schools who have been on the Manaiakalani journey.

Focus today on "connected".  Summary of things that Manaiakalani do so well.
Real focus on visible learning
Coherence across clusters
Learn Create Share
The idea is to cover these aspects over the year:

  • Term 1 focus - Learn
  • Term 2 focus - Create (create to learn)
  • Term 3 focus - Share (foundational skills first)
  • Term 4 focus - bringing it all together

Lots of opportunity to connect
- Staff meetings
- Face to face
- Online

Check out Manaiakalani twitter page called Manaiakalani Cluster.  Great professional learning around these with discussions.  It is a platform which shares comments and discussions that you can add to.

Check the cybersmart resources out so you can adapt and tweak to make it work for your needs.

Google forms

Some great tips and reminders.  The settings options of adding in video and pictures adds to the form.  Easy to create and share with others and see the reminder if required
Google form instructions

Aleisha shared.
Check out breakout - make in sections - google breakout edu - use a lock box that they gather a code with the answers - great way to practice with PAT with multi-choice etc.  Needs to be specific or give them a note in brackets eg. must include a capital.
Include a comma to separate the answer
Breakout example
This would be a fabulous interactive learning activity that the students would love!

Google maps

Wow!  The options with this is amazing!  First time using it and I can see the potential!!  Really enjoyed having a go at this.  The learning for students for recording "their place" is huge.  We could collate a school record of our heritage.

Google Sheets

Tutu with the chart.
Great to have a practice using slightly different shortcuts.  Was fabulous
Practice on Dave's sheets
Go to publish from the chart.  Copy the embed code.  Come back to blog and go to HTML and pop in the break at the end and here we go...

DFI 6: Enabling Access

Enabling Access

Can always go back and check, revisit and review on Manaiakalani sites
MK digital technology

Remember to check that it is visible to everyone - will have to remember this for my curriculum site.

Check the Manaiakalani class on air option - great chance for our staff for their PD too.  You can apply to join this kaupapa.  Might be something for our staff to discuss leading into 2020.

Really great to get some feedback from Kerry on my "garden" site.   It is amazing how much you can get on a site when you know what you are doing.  I have deleted my SLP which Kerry taught me how to edit, as my blog will be the digital record I have of my learning and goals as Principal.

I have now shared my PCS Curriculum site and this is encouraging the learn, create share pedagogy for me as I know it is public and it is not perfect!!  Really good to be put in the "learner" seat in such a public domain.

Feedback attached
DFI Feedback KC

This session was also really helpful to practice and review what we have learnt to date.  Setting 3 goals for the session made me really accountable.  I also enjoyed seeing other sites shared within the group as I gained some insight and ideas from this.  Also the accountability of giving feedback so you had to think about the multi modal options and opportunities for learners to have input.  Photo evidence of me sharing my site.

Lots of learning today around the blog.  Really grateful to have the help of Venessa and Kerry with my colleagues to get things achieved!

As always its about LEARN, CREATE, SHARE!

PCS Curriculum Site 2019

This is work in progress

PCS Curriculum 2019 (work in progress)

My goal is to have our school curriculum on our school website so that whanau can access it.

DFI Session 5 Devices

CYBER SMART

Real focus being "cyber smart" so that our students and adults know how to interact to keep themselves safe online.
Some really good resources in this cybersmart curriculum.  10 categories within the resources which are updated regularly.

Each year this needs to be revisited.
Term 1:  Smart Learners (our Learn term)
Term 2:  Smart Footprint (our Create term)
Term 3:  Smart Relationships (our Share term)

The aim is to have the cyber smart curriculum interweaving into your classroom programme.

Hapara

Great programme to oversee the teaching and learning.
Protection and support systems for all.
Our presenter Kashmina was extremely capable at using "Explain Everything".  Really great to see the sites and learning through the lens of a new entrant classroom.  Again, it is essential to set up the ipads at the start to enable fluid and consistent learning for the students and teachers.  Another message of working collaboratively, sharing and creating in action!

Chromebooks

Lots of practice with shortcut keys
These tips are all here
Chromebook shortcuts

Ipad

All ipads the same - through Hapara.
Start with kawa of care
Explain everything
Practiced cut, copy, paste, taking photos. Fantastic app to use for the junior school.

Screen Castify

Great experience to have a go at Screen Castify.  It is important to be well planned and ready to go for this.  Not the best recording, but an example that it does work.  I have learnt not to put the camera on and record myself as that looks awful!!!  I can see the value in Screen Castify for playing back the learning and additionally for staff meetings and opportunities for access to learning if you have not been able to attend the meeting.

Yet again, another session to enable me to record evidence of my teaching and learning.  The shortcuts and practicing the learning is vital for me.  I need to keep working on "practice" sessions so that I retain this new learning.

DFI Session 4 - Collaborate Sites

Google Hangout with Dorothy

Some really good points about sharing today.  It is not a new concept, but since 2005 its expanded to a worldwide audience.  Certainly not discounting a range of ways to share, not just on technology.  I am appreciative of the reason for using blogs as that is a question that comes up regularly with new staff to Manaiakalani this year.  I have some good reasons to discuss:
- its legal to under age users
- BOT has full control of this via the settings
- it can be monitored and regulated.

Multi-modal
I love this!
Multiple ways of "hooking" our learner in - engaging in their learning style
books, art, movies, links, google maps, text, accessing multiple text, multi levels, multi modes to build on a rich understanding of your learning.
All about engaging students.

Learn Create Share - enables leverage up or down for your students
Multi model explained

An example of multi modal learning
multi modal learning

Teacher planning showing multi modal learning
teacher planning showing multi modal learning

Film making
An exciting opportunity for us in the Far North
movies

SITES

Lots of learning here for me.  I have created a site which is terrible and not very engaging, so great to have a tutu!

This is useful for the colours
colour picker

Think about small or large buttons depending on the audience

I had a go at my own site!  It's very basic, but it worked!!
Gardening Site

My next job is to create a school site that is exciting to view!

COLLABORATION

Another really great session.  As time goes on you can see our group working together in a streamlined way.  People are confident to seek help from each other.  Lots of sharing and giggles in between!  I am absolutely loving the new learning that I am getting each week.  The learning will help stream line my workflow.

Google Keep has been very good to delve into.  I already use it, but have enhanced my use this week.

My next steps will be important to practice my new learning and tutu so I continue to embed in my head!!!

Poster on google draw

Put my new learning in to practice  this week creating a poster and embedding it into my blog.  Great to create with the learning and help our PTFA out too!
Another example of using the learning - and I actually enjoyed it too!

The learning in this task
- explore tool to find a png picture that was approved to publish
- send the picture to the back
- insert text
- change font and colour and add in texture
- manipulate text boxes
- embed
- publish!

This will help my work flow by being creative!

DFI Session 3 - Media

Guest Kent Somerville from Point England
Kent Somerville presentation
Thinking
You can not be creative without "learning" that has happened first.  Think about how we can be creative.  The key is that the learning is effective.

Lots to think about - the key point is that creativity promotes learning, so lots of great things to ensure we are focusing on at school.

Next steps.
Go and check out principal blog from slide (must do this and have a really good look).  The honesty of the journey is quite empowering in my own journey.  I am loving the learning - it is exhausting which is brilliant!!

"Creators of content, not merely consumers" - the kids are doing the work, not just copy and paste

Sisomo (Sight sound and motion)

I need to use Hapara a lot better in the school for our safety and the safety of the students.

Think about using "bulk buy" option through Point England for camera's etc.  A wonderful opportunity as part of the Manaiakalani partnership.

DFI Session 2 Wednesday 13th March 2019 - BOI College

Understanding

Really useful to have the Learn, Create, Share flowing throughout the day. Live examples working through the day. Lots of opportunity to connect with colleagues to check, clarify and share how this can be linked back to school. I love how Manaiakalani kaupapa first and foremost is based on student learning and achievement and the devices are the tool.

We had some technical issues, although it must have been frustrating for Kerry and Venessa, it is a "real" model of what happens. Some great learning around "incognito" that came from this. I love to see the problem solving and sharing of knowledge between the cohort to try to rectify challenges.

Improvement

The main learning for me was tidying up my emails - they are not all there with 21,000 of them, but I will work my way through. Although the google hangout was not successful due to the wifi, I feel much more confident to give this a go. I have been part of a google hangout, but am yet to set one up.

What could I use?

Certainly a great opportunity to keep my emails more efficiently and effectively. I get so many coming in every day.
Next steps for the staff:
- unpack the words "learn, create share" to check in a shared understanding
- refer to the SAMR model (slide 19/20)
- make time to look at google class on air to see "best practice"

Improve confidence and capability.

I think it is important to make time to practice the new learning. If I don't do this weekly, I risk that I will forget too many things.
Another thing I am thinking about is keeping notes on the blog to be able to refer to notes easily.
Recording the hangout via Microsoft Powerpoint was a new concept - I didn't think about linking powerpoint within a hangout.

Next steps

https://sites.google.com/manaiakalani.org/blogging-achievement/home
Homework is to visit these summer learning journey and record our screen and conversation through google hangout.
Link this to the calendar too as a handy resource.

Google Hangout Session (DFI 2)

Amelia Blog

- Summer Learning Journey (SLJ)

Point England School

Questions and thoughts to drive your conversation for the Google Hangout Session:

    • What was the teaching design behind this post? ie what learning outcome was the teacher hoping for?  How was the lesson/activity designed to promote literacy goals? Key Competency goals? ‘Soft Skill’ goals eg collaboration? Manaiakalani pedagogy and Kaupapa (learn create share I Connected, Empowered, Visible, Ubiquitous)
    • This task was about to "learn" about NZ, with a focus on who we are, culture - reading was required to research and check her facts. She is Tongan so there would have been some learning around Maori culture for her to build up her knowledge. I really like that she could adapt the task to suit herself and she provided links to more information. I think the teacher was aiming for literacy with reading mileage and applying new learning to create and share for an audience.
    • What was the learner’s response in the post content ie What did they do? What did they learn? What did they create? What did they share about?
    • She could add further information (which she did). This was a combination of appropriate use of text and images. She went on to do the extra option which impressed we, as she was highly engaged in this task.
    • Who responded to the post and how did this support the learning experience or contribute more to the learning of the child? ie look at the comments beneath the post. Does this reflect a learning conversation? Who was involved in the conversation. How does this contribution to learning stack up against the original task design and/or the child’s post?
    • Really good discussion with the comments on her post. The comments were positive, followed by a thoughtful comment and a question to promote more discussion.

DFI - Session One Wednesday 6th March 2019

Time to reflect and share with colleagues

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Great reminder of the background of Manaiakalani and the kaupapa and pedagogy. Really enjoyed the learn, create share - we actually did that today.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
The tips to speed up my use of the drive, using documents with confidence and clarity will help me immensely. The little short cuts and efficiencies to streamline my workflow will be key. It is amazing how many things you learn and then stop using (ie. Google keep). I am going to work on actually using my new learning so I retain it.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The collaborative sharing for writing will be very useful and the reminder to use the voice typing option. I will also use the contents and footnotes in my documents to help finding information quickly. I think the other very useful option will be the group mail. This will ensure all members are getting messages without overlap, which again will decrease my workload double-handling things.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Speed using the tips and tricks! Getting some order in my document storage and making me use my blog for reflection will be vital. I have started with limited consistency, so this will make me more accountable.
