DFI - Session 9 - Revision

It's the last session!!  Argh!
Priority needs to be given to keep the digital learning at the forefront to ensure I don't forget these pieces of gold I have learnt.  The on-going blog will be really helpful for me to refresh.  Great to have met some new colleagues to be able to shoulder tap to remind me too!

Really like the idea of a "slam dunk" session.  Staff record a screen castify and share for 1-2 minutes at each staff meeting of what they are doing, how it is going and next steps.

Ubiquitous learning was a really good reminder.  This concept of accessing learning anytime, anywhere to help learning is paramount.  The summer learning journey is a great option for our whanau to access.  They would love this option for their tamariki.

Google classroom learning

This is closed - you have to have a login to see it and interact with it.  Therefore class sites are a better option.
Things drop to the bottom so it makes it more cumbersome.

It is in the waffle
Go to + to create classroom
Class name - Enter eg. DFI practice

3 tabs at the top - Stream, Classroom, People
Go to classroom to share
Create

Assignment - choose all or choose some students
Give instructions
Assign points if its an assignment
Choose due date
Can attach anything there
You can change view only copy or editing rights or make a copy for each student - automatically names for the kids
Assign or schedule for them

People - invite students to your class or invite other teachers
Copy and paste a list of students
or join using a code (click on join class)

Exam day today

What a great chance to be in a student position by sitting an exam.  Let's just say it has been a huge learning curve as it has been some time since I have sat an exam!  Great to be reminded of the stress!

Summary

Overall have really enjoyed my DFI time.  It has been great getting out of the school and having a look around at other schools, other practice and pedagogy.  Really nice to tour around different schools and see their spaces too.
It is always great to model being a learner and I have enjoyed challenging my thinking and my knowledge.  Digital is the way forward and to be more stream lined and effective in my work flow is essential.  It has also given me a great deal of confidence to try new things and experiment a bit too.  A huge thanks to Venessa Davan and Kerry Boyde-Preece.  They do a wonderful job and challenging, supporting and enabling!
The focus for me is to continue to keep practicing, using rewindable learning, Screen castify etc, will be great to re-visit my learning.

No DFI but the learning continues

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the DFI session this week as we had a shortage of teacher cover - and it's only week 3 - the struggle is real!!!
However, I continued with my learning through the Manaiakalani kaupapa.
I have re-crafted my pepeha and mihi - inspired by the wonderful schools that we have visited.  I have engaged with key stake holders to ensure that these are correct too!
I have also had a tutu with google forms and am almost ready to share this learning with the community too.
My next step is to create an online newsletter which is far more user friendly than what we are currently doing.

The session of DFI that I missed was a Waitangi with was part of the Raranga Matahiko programme.  I was fortunate enough to attend 2 days prior to DFI to experience the learning through this programme alongside the students.  WOW!  Absolutely love the kaupapa and the opportunities that our Far North tamariki have benefited from.  The classroom teacher is now embedding the learning and it is an exciting journey.  What a bonus to learn through the Waitangi platform.

DFI 7: Dealing with Data

Dealing with data

Reminder to go back and use the Manaiakalani website as a reminder of information and background pedagogy and practice which is so easily accessed.  This is a fabulous resource for us to go and use and refer back to.

Check out the Manaiakalani visit day - they run these 3 times a year - this would be really good PD for our whole school.  Great chance to see these schools who have been on the Manaiakalani journey.

Focus today on "connected".  Summary of things that Manaiakalani do so well.
Real focus on visible learning
Coherence across clusters
Learn Create Share
The idea is to cover these aspects over the year:

  • Term 1 focus - Learn
  • Term 2 focus - Create (create to learn)
  • Term 3 focus - Share (foundational skills first)
  • Term 4 focus - bringing it all together

Lots of opportunity to connect
- Staff meetings
- Face to face
- Online

Check out Manaiakalani twitter page called Manaiakalani Cluster.  Great professional learning around these with discussions.  It is a platform which shares comments and discussions that you can add to.

Check the cybersmart resources out so you can adapt and tweak to make it work for your needs.

Google forms

Some great tips and reminders.  The settings options of adding in video and pictures adds to the form.  Easy to create and share with others and see the reminder if required
Google form instructions

Aleisha shared.
Check out breakout - make in sections - google breakout edu - use a lock box that they gather a code with the answers - great way to practice with PAT with multi-choice etc.  Needs to be specific or give them a note in brackets eg. must include a capital.
Include a comma to separate the answer
Breakout example
This would be a fabulous interactive learning activity that the students would love!

Google maps

Wow!  The options with this is amazing!  First time using it and I can see the potential!!  Really enjoyed having a go at this.  The learning for students for recording "their place" is huge.  We could collate a school record of our heritage.

Google Sheets

Tutu with the chart.
Great to have a practice using slightly different shortcuts.  Was fabulous
Practice on Dave's sheets
Go to publish from the chart.  Copy the embed code.  Come back to blog and go to HTML and pop in the break at the end and here we go...

DFI 6: Enabling Access

Enabling Access

Can always go back and check, revisit and review on Manaiakalani sites
MK digital technology

Remember to check that it is visible to everyone - will have to remember this for my curriculum site.

Check the Manaiakalani class on air option - great chance for our staff for their PD too.  You can apply to join this kaupapa.  Might be something for our staff to discuss leading into 2020.

Really great to get some feedback from Kerry on my "garden" site.   It is amazing how much you can get on a site when you know what you are doing.  I have deleted my SLP which Kerry taught me how to edit, as my blog will be the digital record I have of my learning and goals as Principal.

I have now shared my PCS Curriculum site and this is encouraging the learn, create share pedagogy for me as I know it is public and it is not perfect!!  Really good to be put in the "learner" seat in such a public domain.

Feedback attached
DFI Feedback KC

This session was also really helpful to practice and review what we have learnt to date.  Setting 3 goals for the session made me really accountable.  I also enjoyed seeing other sites shared within the group as I gained some insight and ideas from this.  Also the accountability of giving feedback so you had to think about the multi modal options and opportunities for learners to have input.  Photo evidence of me sharing my site.

Lots of learning today around the blog.  Really grateful to have the help of Venessa and Kerry with my colleagues to get things achieved!

As always its about LEARN, CREATE, SHARE!

PCS Curriculum Site 2019

This is work in progress

PCS Curriculum 2019 (work in progress)

My goal is to have our school curriculum on our school website so that whanau can access it.

Poster on google draw

Put my new learning in to practice  this week creating a poster and embedding it into my blog.  Great to create with the learning and help our PTFA out too!
Another example of using the learning - and I actually enjoyed it too!

The learning in this task
- explore tool to find a png picture that was approved to publish
- send the picture to the back
- insert text
- change font and colour and add in texture
- manipulate text boxes
- embed
- publish!

This will help my work flow by being creative!

DFI Session 3 - Media

Guest Kent Somerville from Point England
Kent Somerville presentation
Thinking
You can not be creative without "learning" that has happened first.  Think about how we can be creative.  The key is that the learning is effective.

Lots to think about - the key point is that creativity promotes learning, so lots of great things to ensure we are focusing on at school.

Next steps.
Go and check out principal blog from slide (must do this and have a really good look).  The honesty of the journey is quite empowering in my own journey.  I am loving the learning - it is exhausting which is brilliant!!

"Creators of content, not merely consumers" - the kids are doing the work, not just copy and paste

Sisomo (Sight sound and motion)

I need to use Hapara a lot better in the school for our safety and the safety of the students.

Think about using "bulk buy" option through Point England for camera's etc.  A wonderful opportunity as part of the Manaiakalani partnership.

Manaiakalani Outreach for PCS

http://www.educationalleaders.govt.nz/Leadership-development/Professional-information/Professional-standards-primary-school-principals
Lots to consider with our new journey alongside the Manaiakalani Outreach Programme.  We have 2x staff members that have intensive weekly professional development working with Donna Yates in their classrooms.  Another staff member is getting a digital intensive fluency.  This links with culture and pedagogy.  We are working on lifting our own capabilities to enhance learning and achievement.  I am really enjoying the small amount of professional development that I am getting through these other staff members, and any interactions I have with the Manaiakalani support network.
